Book Talk

The Custom of the Sea
Neil Hanson

This book takes place in the mid 1800's in England. The captain, Tom Dudely, and his four man crew set sail for Australia from England. The crew is on-board a small yacht named, Mignonette and they are delivering the yacht to its new owner in Australia. The crew is faced with an old ship and thousands of miles of open sea. As the crew is in route they hit a huge storm and the old ship can not handle it and the ship sinks. The crew manged to get into a lifeboat and bring four tins of food with them, but they have no water. They are set adrift for an unknown amount of time. I have currently read up to the point where the crew is pondering drinking sea water, even though it is a death sentence to drink any sea water.

I have enjoyed reading this book, because it incorporates all different aspects into the book. There is history in the book along with action and adventure. I would recommend this book to whoever enjoys reading about history and books with lots of adventure and suspense.

If you where stranded at sea and you could have one thing, but that thing could not get you help get you rescued, what would it be?
